Tableware

Each item of fused-glass tableware Ian produces is the result of deliberate and complex processes, every item undergoes a transformation from small pieces of glass to a finished art object. This process requires multiple firings in the kiln (see FAQ for Kiln Fusing) and constantly evolving creative analysis.

The different types of tableware illustrated in this section are samples of items which employ various different production methods and types of glass. Ian uses the combination of Dichroic glass and other types of coloured glass to produce ranges which are strong in both colour and pattern.

With all of Ian’s work the light transforming, optical effects which glass can achieve is paramount in the decision making process and the techniques employed are used to optimise these qualities. The tableware items which use dichroic glass have magical colour changing properties in different light settings while Ian’s latest range in which he is exploring more complex pattern making techniques allow the production of kaleidoscopic,mandala-type images within the glass which have qualities of pop-art style optics.

The fused-glass tableware which Ian produces come in a variety of differing shapes and sizes ranging from square platters, square rimmed bowls through to sushi dishes. To complement the larger scale pieces Ian also designs and makes coasters which are made to match the colours seen in the larger scale work. A coordinated full set of fused-glass tableware can be manufactured to the customers specifications. Further to this he also produces a corresponding range of more unusual items including fused-glass tea-light holders and fused-glass incense stick holders.
